Polestar

Newsletter for people in education

Polestar was an educational ‘broadsheet’, published six times per year for almost 24 years. It first appeared in December 1976. It perhaps drew its initial inspiration from ‘The Industrial Pioneer’ as it was first mooted by Ian Maclachlan, who was associated with the Pioneer, at an education conference at Tirley Garth, the Cheshire MRA centre.

Polestar aimed to highlight the values needed for an education system which equips new generations to meet the challenges of life and society. It reported people’s experiences more than it expounded principles. Edwin Noble was the first editor and he worked with a team of educationists from schools and colleges. Ann Rignall took over when Edwin died in 1981, and she carried on until publication ceased in 2000.
