Buchman and his friends talked about 'absolute moral standards', of honesty, purity, unselfishness and love as measures, a ruler by which to examine one's conscience. These ethical markers can be found in all spiritual traditions. Buchman drew them from the Bible and from Christ's Sermon on the Mount. Peter Howard talked about standards being like the pole star for mariners: they help you steer your course, but you never actually get there!
