A four-column obituary of the Scottish MRA pioneer Andrew Hastings, written by the Rev Logan Kirk, appeared in The Scotsman, Edinburgh, on 18 March, 2010. He died on 1 February aged 89. The subhead reads: 'Former naval officer whose wartime experiences inspired him to improve the lives of other people, particularly in Africa.'

Following his active war service, the obituary goes on to quote fellow officer Dick Channer: 'Andy, with others, switched over to fight with MRA in the war of ideas on the global front, and to serve God in the eternal struggle between good and evil.'

Logan Kirk continues: 'His work with Moral Re-Armament took him to many parts of the world, especially Africa... In Nigeria he took part in the creation of the film Freedom, based on a play written by Africans with an overwhelmingly African cast.' He married Hazel Squires in 1957, at Caux in Switzerland, and settled in Scotland, at Murrayfield in Edinburgh and then West Linton, where they welcomed many African post-graduate students. Kirk concludes: 'Many will remember Andy particularly as a loyal and steadfast friend. His friendship was distinctive, real and deep.'
