Andrew Lizo Peppetta

Played key role in Harambee Africa programme

Andrew Peppetta from South Africa, played a key role in launching the Harambee Africa programme of Moral Re-Armament in 1965.  He acted the role of one of the militant Mau Mau leaders in the film made from Peter Howard's play 'Voice of the Hurricane'.

Andrew's parents and family came from the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. However, they were living in Cape Town when Andrew was born, one of six siblings. He attended Mount Ailiff Junior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape and went on to Hill Town for his senior high school. He was made a prefect and was comfortable taking leadership. He loved music and was part of the 64-strong choir and later, member of a 5-member singing group.

While at Hill Town Andrew met people working with Moral Re-Armament (now Initiatives of Change) and became a 'staunch member', his 89-year old brother said at the funeral service. He completed his teacher's training and applied for a post in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He worked with MRA in several countries in Africa and was part of the team that launched Harambee Africa, a youth training musical programme, in 1966. He also spent a number of years in the United States. At Mackinac Island he and another South African, Chris Schutz, helped build the theatre at the then MRA centre, in the middle of an icy winter.

For many years Andrew worked with World Vision specialising in refugees, both in Malawi and in South Africa until he retired.

He is described as a 'good husband', 'a real gentleman', 'an outstanding cook', a 'great listener' who grew in wisdom and insight and one who 'valued God's word'.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 57 years of marriage, Laura (born Bell, from the USA), their son and two daughters and their families.
