The beginnings of UWP have roots in the musical expression "Sing-Out". This was born at a Moral Re-armament (MRA) conference at Mackinac Island in 1965. In 1968 Blanton Belk wanted to move away from association with the basic philosophy behind MRA, and therefore incorporated "Up with People".
