Author Calls for Conscience Driven Decision-Making in Economic Life

A new edition of Michael Smith’s book, Trust and integrity in the global economy, has been published by St Paul Press in Mumbai

A new edition of Michael Smith’s book, Trust and integrity in the global economy, has been published by St Paul Press in Mumbai, India. The book was given a ceremonial launch at the ‘Heart of Effective Leadership’ conference at Asia Plateau, the IofC conference centre in Panchgani, on 4 February 2009.

The book was unwrapped and present to the conference by Mr C L Kaw, former Chairman of the Indian Railways Board, the world’s largest employer with over two million employees. Smith was invited to give the opening keynote address in which he stressed the need for conscience-based decision-making, not just profit-driven, in all economic life, following the disasters of the global economic crisis.

The book contains three new chapters, including one written by Esme McAvoy about a ‘miracle’ health train in South Africa, managed by Dr Lillian Cingo, which meets the needs of the rural poor; an account of the 2008 Trust and Integrity (TIGE) conference in Caux, Switzerland, from which the book takes its title; and a new chapter on the moral, ethical and spiritual challenges of the global economic downturn.

St Paul Press has printed an initial 2,000 copies and has asked Smith to prepare more chapters for a possible second Indian edition, focusing on stories of enterprises and businesses which have been inspired and infused by the spirit of Initiatives of Change.

The publisher made available 50 copies of the book for sale in London and Caux through Caux Books.
