Åbacka

Åbacka - the village that disappeared

Esta página existe en:

Åbacka was one of the small villages opposite Västerbotten's mountain world, which disappeared during the Ume River's regulation in the 1950s.

Here Gunda grew up with five siblings. The homeland on Lake Storjuktan had been cleared of long grass and roots by her grandparents in the late 19th century. During severe winters and work-filled summer months they had to fight for survival.

Gunda traveled to Stockholm and took his place as maid. World War II cast its shadow over existence. The girl from sparse countryside was looking for something big to live for. She found that unexpectedly.

In the life task that has become her, the inheritance from home in Åbacka has provided inspiration and power.

Gunda Sjögren f. Holmgren talks about his origins, his upbringing, his struggle. The book was created in collaboration with Gerd Jonzon, who listened while Gunda told and attached her experiences to the paper.
