Community action in Westminster

Initiatives of Change UK’s Sustainable Communities Programme assisted the Filipino Club, based at Westminster Cathedral

Initiatives of Change UK’s Sustainable Communities Programme assisted the Filipino Club, based at Westminster Cathedral, to conduct a leadership workshop on 7 September 2014.

The workshop, attended by around 40 members, was initiated by Florencia Cayaban Kingscote, President of the Filipino Club, who participated in the Women, Leadership and Sustainable Change programme organised by IofC-UK early in the year.

The training programme was conducted by Vall Nellis Gordon, an accomplished Life Coach. According to Florencia: 'The Filipino Club has a diverse membership. We are not confined to the Filipino community. Several from other other communties are part of our network. We also had new faces.'

The training agenda dealt with dreams, purpose, and transformational change and also challenged the members to think how they could progress the Filipino Club. Vall guided the group with her mapping strategy and asked members what are the important landmarks that helped shape the Club.

Using reflective methods, Vall helped members visualise where the Club was at present, what the members wanted from the Club and what they could do to progress the Club further. Her questions led members to think of how they could reach their goals.

Florencia said: 'I believe that the workshop had given the members knowledge and discover their hidden skills and to use their skills to have a positive attitude to change, not only for themselves but also for the Filipino Club to which they belong. We will be continuing this initiative.'
