Kim Beazley’s life demonstrates what a powerful calling of service politics can be. I acted as his chauffeur and aide-de-camp during a visit that Kim and his wife Betty made to South Africa and Namibia during the time of apartheid. What a privilege!
I heard him speak again and again, without notes, with passion and conviction, about his life’s work of restoring dignity to the Aboriginal people of Australia. But he also noticed that I had a hole in my shoes, and no money to buy a new pair… I still have the pair that he bought me.
