Henry, father of Jan Smith, nee Bouch, and father-in-law of Michael Smith, was a life-long banker, from the age of 16, with the National Provincial Bank, initially in Faversham, Kent. He was transferred to their Halifax branch in Yorkshire in the 1930s. While there he encountered members of the Oxford Group who were on an outdoor gathering in the Yorkshire Dales and later attended a weekend house party of the Oxford Group in the home of Neville and Joan Smith, parents of Mike, in Shipley. Henry’s career culminated in the City of London at the headquarters of the National Provincial, which later merged to become NatWest. He and his wife, Grace (nee Linscott) retired to Sevenoaks, Kent. They were keen supporters of the Westminster Theatre in London. He died in 2003.
