Vreni Gonzenbach 1908-2010
I met Vreni in Caux many years ago, and I always remembered her imposing size and endearing personality. Later we corresponded because she was one of the readers of Zig Zag. In 2008 her 100th birthday was the subject of an article in Zig Zag written by Hanni Häberli.
In 2009 she wrote to Jean and me, in her clear and regular handwriting, a letter that began with "The future is full of possibilities and hope". Here are some excerpts:
"At this time of year before Christmas I once again make the rounds of friends who have a place in my daily prayers. And to feel those connections feels good. Have you been able to catch your breath after a busy summer in Caux? Of course it must be very interesting to be part of all this, but for me those days are gone, but they are still unforgettable and what I learned there is still a great help.
Vreni passed away peacefully on February 19th shortly after her 102nd birthday. There is much more to be said about such a rich life, and on March 17, the Ulster Anzeiger published an article about her, the last paragraph of which said: "She kept her critical mind alive, her beautiful smile and her confidence until the end. Even on the last day of a long life, she still had a moment of silence, as she had learned in Caux."
