A Dalit from New Delhi
In the late 1960s Babu Lal was a peon (messenger carrier) who lived in a Delhi slum. He was a Dalit. He hated the upper Castes and had feuded with three men for years in his own community. He learned that 'when you point your finger at your neighbour there are three pointing back at you'.
He made a dramatic, public apology to the four men for his hatred. His bitterness evaporated and he decided to devote his time to helping the children of his community to get a basic education and also to learn how to change the ills of their society by starting with themselves. His initiative had a sweeping affect on the life of the community.
