Philip worked as a full time volunteer with MRA from 1966 to 1997. During that time he spent four years in India (1967-71) when he befriended and spent a great deal of time with members of a Dalit (a.k.a Harijan) community in Delhi. Subsequent visits to India have amounted to more than two years altogether. The years 1976-8 he took time away from MRA to attended the Birmingham Theatre School, Birmingham (UK), and in January 1980 he married Swedish actress Vendela Löfgren (1950-2018). In 1986-7 Philip directed, and together he and Vendela toured with, the Nordic revue, 'Vem Narras?'. Following this Philip wrote the two-hander comedy 'Let's Talk Turkey', directed by Swedish/Latvian director Andris Blekte, and for two years they toured Britain with the play and also performed at Caux, Switzerland, as well as in Bulgaria and Russia. In 1992 they moved to Sweden and during the '90s made a number of trips to Russia. In 1994 both received diplomas in the Russian language from the Russian Educational Centre, Moscow. 1996-7 they wrote and performed a satiracal revue, 'Stalling Between Two Fools'.
From 1997 until 2019 Philip was a reader/recorder of talking books for the Swedish Authority of Accessible Media, recording more than 550 titles in mostly university level study literature. He and Vendela moved to the island of Tjörn on Sweden's west coast in 2010 and Vendela died there in June 2018. In August of 2019 Philip married Margaret Smith in the United states and they have homes in Washington DC and in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Over the years Philip appeared in many productions at the Westminster Theatre, London, where for a time he was Assistant Artistic Director, and at Caux, in India and elsewhere. These included: 'Through The Garden Wall' (Peter Howard), 'An Inspector Calls' (J B Priestly), 'Skeletons' (Hugh Williams), 'Mr Wilberforce MP' (Alan Thornhill) among many others. In 1977 he played Scrooge in a musical version of "A Christmas Carol" at the Old Birmingham Rep. He also wrote and performed a host of humorous sketches at Caux over the course of many summers there.
