Baron Pavel Nicolai is, in a sense, the progenitor of the "Moral Re-Armament" tradition in Eastern Europe. While not a member of the Oxford Group and living within the Russian Empire, Baron Nicolai embraced in many ways the same tradition of Christian revivalism as Frank Buchman, with whom he was well acquainted.

"...In him lived the soul of a reformer; his sources of deepest inspiration were Christ and the Gospel. He was one of the first to work among the prisoners in Russia and with his activities embraced all of Siberia. He became the second man in the World Student Christian Federation after its leader John Mott. Nicolai's activities knew no boundaries: neither class, nor race, nor geography, nor religion. The influence of this figure can be traced throughout the twentieth century. In many countries of the world people still ask about him, wanting to know what was the secret of his power and authority..." (From a book by Paul Gundersen)
