Dennis was born 12 March 1922 in Sydney and died 7 April 2009 in Bendigo. He and Chris married sisters: Helen and Janet Nall. (Janet had two daughters, Sarah and Ali, but Helen did not have children.)

During World War II Dennis was with the Australian forces in the Pacific and was involved in early use of radar, then a top secret project. His special skill was in photography which became his life profession. He ultimately ran his own studio in Melbourne's Collins Street. Before that he worked with companies like General Motors. His work included some aerial photography.

He spent some time in his younger years working with Moral Re-Armament, including at Caux, also using his photographic skills.

When , the Aboriginal elder, was writing her book 'If Everyone Cared' Dennis and Helen accompanied her to take photographs and assist in her research. Dennis's work included a fine series of portraits of the author including the one that appears on the cover. His contribution is included in the acknowledgements.
